When it opened in 2011, Avoca Coffee kicked off a coffee revolution in Fort Worth. Avoca became the city’s first coffee shop with its own roasting program. Over the years, they have expanded to four locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area: Fort Worth Stockyards, Magnolia Avenue, Foch Street, and Denton. Avoca Coffee Roasters will celebrate its 15th anniversary on Saturday, March 7.

As Magnolia Avenue was just taking shape, Avoca Coffee Roasters arrived inside an old auto body shop. It was one of the first locally-owned coffee shops to source and roast its own specialty beans. It was a revelation at a time when Starbucks had the market cornered. Options were few. Many have followed in its footsteps, but loyal customers have remained true to their hometown bag of beans.

Avoca remains one of the best coffee houses in Fort Worth.

“When I think about the last 15 years, I think about all the ways Magnolia has transformed and how Avoca has grown alongside it,” Craig Morgan, owner of Avoca, says. “This has always been a labor of love. Creating spaces where people want to be, where community happens — and doing it with obsessive attention to quality — that’s the real reward.”

Great Beans Led to Steady Growth

Magnolia Avenue has been transformed, one warehouse, one long-forgotten and dilapidated building after another. Today, the vibrant corridor is the pride of the Southside. Its redevelopment has become a blueprint for revitalizing other parts of town in like fashion.

“The company’s growth has since mirrored Fort Worth’s development,” a release says. As new areas were reimagined, Avoca just had to be part of it. They joined the West 7th District with its Foch Street location in 2016. Then in 2021, Avoca opened in the Mule Alley development in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. “As the only coffee shop in the district, the location serves both locals and the millions of tourists who visit each year.”

“Being in the Stockyards means we get to introduce Fort Worth to visitors from all over the world,” says Operations Manager Ced Dowdy, who runs the Stockyards location. “We’re also the only breakfast option and coffee shop in the area, which is an opportunity we take seriously.”

Avoca also expanded to Denton in 2021. Just blocks from the University of North Texas campus, it’s a favorite study spot for students in the rapidly growing city, they say.

Community Remains at The Core for Avoca

Local coffee shops are a gathering place for their community. “Avoca has long served as a space for creatives to gather and work. Walk into any Avoca location and you’ll find walls adorned with rotating artworks from local artists.”

Avoca takes part in neighborhood events and also regularly hosts open mic nights, providing a platform for poets, musicians, and storytellers. The shops showcase local musicians too.

“We want to create spaces where the community can gather, create, and connect,” Justin Morrissette, Avoca’s Operations Manager, shared. “That means opening our doors to artists, musicians, and anyone who wants to be part of something.”

Avoca partners with local bakeries, extending their embrace of local business. These include The Black Rooster Bakery and Swiss Pastry Shop. Avoca also became the official coffee provider for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, taking part in this epic annual event. And, “The company donates its used coffee grounds to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden for composting and soil creation, turning waste into nourishment for one of the city’s most beloved green spaces.”

Join the celebration on March 7, all Avoca Coffee Roasters locations will feature a special Iced Birthday Cake Latte, and the Magnolia and Denton locations will also celebrate with live music, local vendors, and specialty drinks.
